Yarn standards, and who sets them

StitchNest counts rows and keeps your project notes. It does not hold a stitch dictionary, and pattern conventions differ between UK and US terminology in ways that will ruin a piece if you mix them. The organisations below are independent of ClearStack Apps.

The Craft Yarn Council standards

• Craft Yarn Council — standards and guidelines — the industry body whose standards most English-language patterns are written against. Start here.
• Yarn weight system — the numbered categories from lace to jumbo, with the gauge ranges and recommended needle and hook sizes for each.
• Knitting abbreviations — the standard abbreviation list, for when a pattern assumes you already know what it means.
• Crochet abbreviations — the crochet equivalent, including the US and UK stitch-name conflicts.

Guilds

• The Knitting Guild Association — US guild; correspondence courses, a skills certification path and local chapters.
• Crochet Guild of America — the US crochet equivalent, with its own masters programme and conferences.
• The Knitting & Crochet Guild (UK) — UK guild holding a large collection of historical patterns and publications, plus local groups.

Honest scope

A counter reduces the chance of losing your place, which is most of what goes wrong in a long project. It cannot check your gauge, read your pattern, or tell you the sleeves will match. That still comes down to swatching and counting.
