CakeDesk

Cake order book for home bakers

Every order on the day it is collected.

CakeDesk keeps a home bakery's orders by pickup date, lays the baking out backwards from each one, suggests a price from your ingredient costs, packaging, overheads, labour and margin, and keeps the deposit and the balance on the same screen.

Five open orders on the standard tier.
Unlock for $2.99/mo, $14.99/yr or $29.99 once.

The CakeDesk week of 21 to 27 September: Saturday holds two pickups, Lena Ortiz's lemon cupcakes at 9am marked Baking with $48 owed and Maya Chen's two-tier vanilla at 11am marked Confirmed with $190 owed, with the bake plan steps for each on the days before

COUNTED BACK FROM PICKUP

Thursday says to bake the Saturday sponge

Tell CakeDesk once what a kind of job takes, and each order lays its own steps out from its pickup day. For a decorated cake, shopping, baking, filling, crumb coating and decorating appear on the days set in its bake plan, with the cake's photo beside each step. The kinds and their steps are yours to edit.

  • Included order kinds: decorated cake, cupcakes, cookies and bread, each with its steps
  • A step is a label and a number of days before pickup, or on the day
  • Set how many pickups you take on a day, and a day over it is marked
  • Tomorrow's steps arrive as a reminder, with deposits and balances as they fall due

A step belongs to the order it came from, so moving a pickup moves its steps with it.

The bake plan for the week of 21 September: Monday's fill and crumb coat for Sam Achebe, Tuesday's pickup for Sam at 4pm and a shop for Maya Chen, each step with a photo of the cake it belongs to
The week's bake plan, each step with its cake beside it.

WHAT IT KEEPS

The order book and the costing in one place

What an order holds

The customer, the occasion, the pickup time or the delivery address, the design notes, and the allergy notes in the customer's own words. Photographs of what was asked for sit on the order card and at the top of the order. Each item carries its own price; the order carries the deposit you asked for, what has been paid and what is left.

A quote stays a quote

A quoted order is not counted as money owed. Mark it confirmed when the customer says yes, then baking, ready and collected as the week goes. The price you agreed is the price; the costing beside it is a suggestion and the screen says so.

Costing that shows its working

Enter what you buy and what the pack costs, in grams, kilograms, millilitres, litres, ounces, pounds, cups or each. Each recipe works out its own cost from those prices, so a price change recosts every recipe that uses it. The suggested price adds your hands-on time at your hourly rate, packaging, an overhead percentage, and a margin taken out of the price rather than added onto the cost. Where it cannot cost a line, it says which line and why.

Ingredient labels

A sheet of 4, 6, 8 or 10 labels, with the ingredients heaviest first and the allergens picked out. Choose United States cottage food or United Kingdom prepacked for direct sale label fields, then enter your details and any required statement. The two formats do not carry the same fields, and the app does not pretend they do.

Allergy notes that follow the customer

An allergy note taken once on a customer appears on every order of hers after it, kept apart from the ingredient allergens because the two are different facts.

Documents and the month in figures

A quote, an invoice, a receipt, and an order sheet for the kitchen with the steps, the notes and the reference photos and no prices on it. Reports show what you collected, the deposits you are holding, what your ingredients cost, the hours that went in and what you make most, by month or by year, and export as CSV.

WHY IT WORKS THIS WAY

Built around the price you agreed

The price you agreed never moves

The costing is recalculated when an ingredient price changes; the agreed price on an order is yours and the app never rewrites it. Orders already agreed keep the currency they were agreed in.

It says what it could not cost

A recipe with a line that has no price, a cup measure with no grams-per-cup figure, or an item with no recipe linked is named on the screen, rather than quietly left out of the total.

A label is what you typed

CakeDesk prints your entries in the label format you chose, with the statement you entered. It does not certify that a label meets any state's or council's requirements, and it says so on the label screen.

Nothing you entered is ever hidden

The standard tier keeps five open orders at a time; an order marked collected stops counting. Whatever you decide about paying, every order, customer and recipe stays open and editable.

On your phone, no account

It works with no connection and asks for no account. There is no advertising in the app. Crash reports and usage statistics are sent so problems can be found and fixed.

Moving phones

One backup file holds the whole book, photographs included, and restores onto another Android phone. Restoring merges it with what is already there: anything missing is added and nothing already on the phone is overwritten.

QUESTIONS

Before you install it

Does CakeDesk take payments or run an online shop?

No. You record what you were paid and how it arrived: cash, bank transfer, card or other. There is no shop page, no checkout and no messaging to customers.

What counts as an open order on the standard tier?

An order that has not been collected yet. Mark one collected and it stops counting, so a finished order never costs you a slot.

Will the suggested price change the price I agreed?

No. The suggested price is worked out beside your price and never replaces it. Use it with one tap if you want to, or ignore it.

Does it tell me whether my label is legal?

No. It prints your entries in the label format you chose, with the ingredients heaviest first, and the statement your own programme requires goes in a box you fill in. CakeDesk prints what you typed and does not certify that a label meets any requirement.

What if I change my currency later?

New orders use the new currency. Orders already agreed keep the currency they were agreed in, so an old price is never rewritten.

What if I change phones?

Save a backup, which is one file with the whole book in it, photographs included, and restore it on the new phone. There is no account and no cloud copy.
