What it does

A switch on every phone.

Live, Places only, Pause until tomorrow or Off. Each person sets their own sharing mode, the screen says in plain words what is being shared right now, and a notification shows whenever sharing is on. Nobody can turn on someone else’s sharing.

The family map.

Everyone sharing live on one map, with the place they are at, how long ago their phone last updated and its battery. A position that has not updated for a while is shown faded with its age, so you can tell an older position from a current one.

Places with arrive and leave alerts.

Home, school, work, grandma’s. Set each circle’s size on the map and choose alerts on arrival, on leaving or both. Places only shares these arrivals and departures without showing where someone is.

SOS.

Hold the button for two seconds to send the whole family an alert with your location, then an update every minute for five minutes while the screen stays open. It can also open your messaging app with a location message for up to two numbers you choose. Tapping I’m safe stops the updates and sends the family an all-clear alert.

Check in and battery.

One tap sends “I’m here” with your position, even when you are not sharing live. Each person’s battery and charging state shows on the map, with an optional alert when a phone drops to 15%.

Is my sharing working?

One screen checks location, permissions, notifications and battery saving, says when your phone last reached the family, and shows what to check when a setting is off.

Why it works this way

Everyone can see what they share.

Sharing is switched on only on the person’s own phone, after the app explains what it collects, and a notification shows the whole time. Every member sees who is in the family and what each person shares.

Location history is kept for seven days.

On the family plan, history is kept for seven days and then deleted, and anyone can delete their own sooner. Leave a family and your history is removed from it. Your location is not sold or used for advertising, and the app has no ads.

One plan for the whole family.

Any adult buys it and it covers up to eight people. The standard plan stays usable for two people and two places.

Questions

Can someone share my location without me knowing?

No. Sharing is turned on only on your own phone, the app shows an ongoing notification while sharing is on, and you can switch to Places only, pause until tomorrow or turn it off whenever you like.

What does Places only share?

Only your arrivals at and departures from your family’s named places. Your position is read on your phone to tell whether you arrived or left, and it is not stored or shown on the map.

Does it work on iPhone?

No. FamilyPin is an Android app.

How long is location history kept?

Seven days on the family plan, then it is deleted. Each person can delete their own history at any time, and it is removed from the family when they leave.

Is FamilyPin an emergency service?

No. SOS sends an alert to your family and can open your messaging app with a location message for up to two numbers you choose. In danger, call your local emergency number.

Who pays?

Any adult in the family can buy the plan, and it covers everyone in the family, up to eight people.
